LaGier AJ, Elbe A, Thamke A, Anderson P (2022) Vibration, a treatment for migraine, linked to calpain driven changes in actin cytoskeleton. PLOS ONE 17(4): e0262058.
The group recently published findings that describe how epithelial cells exposed to vibration retract filopodia, which are antennae that help cells move. Published in PLOS ONE and titled “Vibration, a treatment for migraine, linked to calpain driven changes in actin cytoskeleton” the paper was co-authored by Grand View University biology students, Andrew Elbe, Amanda Thamke and Payton Anderson.
Brief and localized encounters with vibration are known to reduce pain of such things as injections, acute headaches and hair restoration procedures. Clinically, vibration is also used in managing diseases such as meibomian gland dysfunction, cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease. This discovery provides a foundation to explain how treatment with vibration is analgesic.
Kudos to Dr. Adriana LaGier and student authors! #cellbiolady
